Nintendo’s February brought a bunch of new game announcements, some predictable inclusions, some familiar faces and some stuff no one saw coming (Tetris Battle Royale anybody?). Here’s a breakdown of what we saw, ranked by my personal preference ;)
I wasn’t sure what this was when first shown, as the trailer continued, I was doing that Vince Mcmahon meme face… You know the one…
Developed by Platinum Games Astral Chain is an action game with Cyberpunk themes, there’s mechas, police and what looks like a bayonetta / Nier inspired battle system – which makes absolute sense as Nier Automata’s designer Takahisa Taura is directing and Bayonetta’s director Hideki Kamiya is supervising. Check the trailer below.
Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening
I don’t think anyone saw this one coming – 1993’s Gameboy fan favourite getting a 2019 remake, Link’s awakening is coming full circle here, in 93 it was Links first outing on a mobile platform and it lives again for the Switch. While the art style may prove divisive among hardcore fans, I’m looking forward to exploring this reimagined Koholint Island.
This one left me scratching my head a bit – I’m still not 100% sure how this is going to work – but in a masterly troll move Nintendo announces a exclusive battle royale only it’s Tetris. It’s also free if you’re part of Nintendo Switch Online – Nintendo’s monthly service. It’s available now.
Super Mario Maker 2
Most Nintendo fans had been expecting this at some point, if you’re a fan of Mario platformers this is a no brainer, almost limitless levels from the community, build your dream level, troll your friends with your insane designs or just satisfy your Goomba crushing needs. Want to be the next Shigeru Miyamoto, this is the game for you. It’s out June this year.
Those are the big 4 hitters for me from the presentation, there were of course plenty more announcements than that. Fire Emblem, Smash Bros updates, Bloodstained – Ritual of the Night and a lot more, you can check it all out in the full Direct below.
